Understanding Syria's Armed Opposition

Event Date:
March 16, 2012
Location:
1616 P Street NW, 7th Floor

As U.S. policymakers debate next steps in Syria, one of their main questions has been about the identity of the many opposition groups there. Joseph Holliday, a senior research analyst at the Institute for the Study of War, seeks to answer that question with his new report, “Syria’s Armed Opposition.” In this report, Holliday analyzes the organization and operations of many of the country’s armed opposition groups that operate under the banner of the Free Syrian Army. Holliday will give a briefing on the report on Friday morning.

The briefing will track the Free Syrian Army’s evolution over 2011 and 2012, providing information on the movement and highlighting where structure does and does not exist within the movement. It will also explore how the conflict has developed in recent months, and examine how the regime’s response has affected the armed opposition.

Holliday is also the author of “The Struggle for Syria in 2011: An Operational and Regional Analysis.”
