Afghanistan Resources
As the Obama Administration readies to release its report on Afghanistan, ISW has released several helpful resources on troop deployments. The Afghanistan Order of Battle (ORBAT), updated for March, shows where troops are located in Afghanistan. In addition, ISW has released a new resource that describes what troops are available for deployment to Afghanistan. Finally, ISW's Iraq ORBAT has also been updated for March.
Next week, ISW President, Kimberly Kagan, will participate in a panel discussion on NATO's role in Afghanistan. The panel discussion, NATO's 60th Anniversary Summit, will take place on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at the Heritage Foundation. Other panelists include Michael O'Hanlon of Brookings and Sally McNamara of the Heritage Foundation. Click here for more details. Odom, commanding officer, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, and Abdul Majid, an Afghan National Police (ANP) officer, discuss professionalism and increased security measures being put in place in Delram, Farah, Afghanistan, March 23, 2009, in response to the police station in Deleram being targeted by a vehicle-borne explosive device March 20. The ANP and Mariens from 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment have partnered to route out insurgents in the Delaram area. Odom is the commanding officer of the group combat element for the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force-Afghanistan, which is helping to reconstruct and develop Southern Afghanistan and providing security for the region's people.
