Paraag Shukla

Paraag Shukla is a Senior Research Analyst at the Institute for the Study of War, where he focuses on national governance in Afghanistan. Prior to joining ISW, Mr. Shukla served as an Intelligence Officer with the Department of Defense, where he focused on Afghan governance, politics, and strategic policy. In 2010, Mr. Shukla deployed to the ISAF Joint Command in Afghanistan, where he received a joint service commendation medal for his analysis of governance issues as well as planning for the 2010 Parliamentary Elections.

Mr. Shukla has briefed Congressional staff, U.S. and coalition military personnel, and civilians on Afghanistan. He has also provided print, radio, and on-camera analysis for several domestic and international media outlets, including CNN, NPR, Fox News, Voice of America, McClatchy News, La Razón, and The Sankei Shimbun.

Mr. Shukla previously worked at the RAND Corporation, where he authored a study on counterinsurgency study on Kashmir. He holds a degree in Government and International Politics from George Mason University and is fluent in Hindi. He has conducted extensive research on the 1999 Kargil War between India and Pakistan, about which he is writing a feature screenplay.
