Read Transcript Part II: Command Voices with LTC (P) Vowell (PDF)

The Institute for the Study of War hears from two commanders about their experiences in Afghanistan over the past year.

First, Major General Jim Huggins, former Commander of the 82nd Airborne Division and Regional Command (South), discusses the evolving security situation in Southern Afghanistan, the effects of the surge, and the challenges that remain.

Huggins returned from a yearlong combat tour in Afghanistan in September 2012 and has also served in Iraq.

Next we heard from LTC J.B. Vowell, former Commander of TF No Slack in Kunar, Afghanistan.  He discussed the operating environment in that province, where al Qaeda and its affiliates continue to operate.

He has been selected to command 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division after completing his fellowship at the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University.  He has also served in Iraq.
