Control of Terrain in Iraq

On December 18 and 19, the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) regained control of parts of Baiji in Salah ad-Din province in northern Iraq.

Changes for November 24, 2014 Update: On November 23, Iraqi Kurdish Peshmerga, Iraqi Security Forces (ISF), and Popular Mobilization Units (PMUs) that include Iraqi Shi’a militias cleared the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham from the areas of Jalula and Sadia in Diyala province in northeastern Iraq.

On November 14, Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and the Popular Mobilization Units (PMUs) which include Iraqi Shi’a militias were able to achieve significant advances against the Islamic State of Iraq al-Sham (ISIS) in the strategic town of Baiji in Salah ad-Din province in northern Iraq. Baiji has been under the control of ISIS since June of this year and is also home to Iraq’s biggest oil refinery, the Baiji Refinery which has endured a five-month long ISIS siege.

The Iraqi Security Forces (ISF)  and Popular Mobilization Units (PMUs) which include Iraqi Shi'a militias are continuing to challenge the presence and positions of the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) in the Baiji area north of Tikrit in northern Iraq.

ISIS has taken the city of Hit in Anbar, as reported on October 2, and controls the town west of the Euphrates.

The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) launched a complex attack on the city of Hit on the Euphrates River in Anbar province.

The Peshmerga and Iraqi Sunni tribes supported by U.S. airstrikes cleared the area of Rabia on the Iraq-Syria border.

Suleiman Beg is now under Iraqi government control and as a result, the Kirkuk-Baghdad highway is reported to be re-opened.

Between August 29-31 a combined force of the ISF, Iraqi Shi’a militias, and the Peshmerga, broke ISIS’s siege of Amerli in Salah ad-Din province.
