ISIS seized the Tanf border crossing between Iraq and Syria, circled in the map above. The status of the Walid border crossing on the Iraq side is still unknown and assessed to be contested.

Since the start of the operation to capture Tikrit and its environs, the ISF, Iraqi Shi'a militias, and Iraqi Sunni tribal fighters from Salah ad-Din have been advancing from two main axes: south, from Samarra, and east, from the direction of Diyala and Kirkuk.
Mansouriya, Sudur Dam, and Muqdadiyah: On January 23, the ISF and Iraqi Shi’a militias launched an operation to clear ISIS from areas north of the main area of Muqdadiyah district, including the area where the Sudur dam is located.
Dhuluiya sub-district and its environs, as well as areas near Balad district were cleared of ISIS on December 29, 2014 following a wide-scale operation launched by various Iraqi Shi’a militias and the ISF.
The area of Nebai is part of the system north of Baghdad and is part of the northern Baghdad belt.
On December 20 and 21, Iraqi Kurdish Peshmerga “in coordination” with Syrian Kurdish YPG forces and Iraqi Yazidi fighters entered the center of Sinjar district in western Ninewa province.
